Galaxy Power, Incorporated Introduces a Dramatic Improvement in Lithium-Ion Charging Time with: QuickLithium

QuickLithium is a breakthrough in Lithium-Ion Battery charging technology. The breakthrough meythod allows Lithium-Ion batteries to be charged in approximately one hour. Exisiting Lithium-Ion charging methods take up to 3 1/2 hours to fuly charge a Lithium Battery. Lithium Batteries are used in most portable electronic devices including cell phones.

The dramatic charge time reduction is realized by dynamically compensation for changes in cell resistance during the charging process. This is based on a revolutionary patented charging algorthim. Patented Quicksaver technology possesses pulse charging and termination techniques.

Existing methods for charging Lithium-Ion batteries use a constant electrical current. When the battery terminal voltage reaches 4.2 volts per cell, the charging current is decreased to maintain a constant terminal voltage of 4.2 volts. Charging current is monitored and decreased to typically 10% of the constant current setting, charging ceases and the battery is considered charged. Prior to QuickLithium a Lithium-ion battery would be charged using constant current until the votage at the battery terminals measures 4.2 volts per cell. Then the current is decreased to maintain voltage. this technique results in a charge to end early resulting in a prolonged time to the end or the charge.

Galaxy Power Inc. has developed a technique in which the internal battery resistence is continuously measured. This is based on real time data. The charger dynamically compensates for the battery's resisance. Instead of arbitrarily limiting charging voltage to 4.2 volts/cell it measures at the cell. The net effect of the dynamic conpensation technique is it reduces charging times to approximately one hour from empty to full. Galaxy Power's technique recalculates the cell resistance once each second and alters charging current accordingly. Termination occurs when charging current falls to 10% of rated battery capacity.

QuickLithium improves charging time by a factor of 3 or better. It is revolutionary for consumers as it improves battery performance in mobile devices. Pulsed QuickSaver technolgy reduces cell resistance build-up and reduces battery capacity fade. Dynamic battery resistance compensation adjusts for the remaining resistance in battery packs due to straps, wiring and protection devices in the battery. No additional hardware is required with this technique, no cost penalty is incurred using this method resulting in a very cost competitive solution to the problem of charging Lithium-Ion batteries.
